Chile’s competition watchdog clears $33.4bn AES takeover by BlackRock and EQT funds

·

Chile's competition regulator, the FNE, has approved without conditions the takeover of the US power company AES by funds run by BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners and Sweden's EQT, The Rio Times reports.

The deal, agreed in March at $15 a share, values AES at about $10.7bn, or $33.4bn including debt. AES's Chilean arm, AES Andes, has around 4,079 megawatts of capacity. The regulator found that AES and the buyers' existing Chilean assets would together hold about 10 per cent of the country's generation capacity, too little to shut out rivals.

It also looked at whether the funds, which own data centres near Santiago, could restrict power to competing operators, and concluded they could not. The sale still needs other approvals and is expected to close in late 2026 or early 2027.
