Lilyfield residents fight Inner West Council plan for 20-storey blocks

·

Residents of Lilyfield in Sydney's inner west are campaigning against rezoning proposals that would allow buildings of up to 20 storeys near light rail stops, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The plans form the second stage of the Inner West Council's Fairer Future scheme, its own alternative to the New South Wales government's transport-hub rezonings. The first stage, adopted last year, aims to deliver more than 30,000 homes. A local opposition group says it has 675 members and has raised $10,000 for an independent review.

The mayor, Darcy Byrne, has conceded that 20-storey blocks in Lilyfield would be over the top and said they would be significantly scaled back in December. A motion to extend public consultation beyond 28 October was defeated eight votes to seven. Sydney YIMBY backs the wider plan.
