In a new development in the dispute over Meta's handling of Brazil's election, the country's electoral prosecutor has told the electoral court that the company has not fully complied with orders to treat the two presidential run-off campaigns equally, and has suggested a fine, The Rio Times reports.
The opinion, made public on Thursday, says Meta fell short on required statistics and on filters in its AI tools, and handled complaints from the two campaigns differently. It cites cases where Meta's translation and image tools responded differently depending on the candidate named, while noting that Meta reversed advertising restrictions and refunded undelivered boosts.
No amount was proposed. The court set a daily fine of R$500,000 on 15 October, and the judge in charge has yet to rule. The run-off between Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro is on Sunday.
