Guntur doctors report phage therapy success against drug-resistant infection

·

A medical team in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, says it has used bacteriophage therapy to cure a patient whose infection had resisted repeated courses of antibiotics, The Hindu reports.

The patient had a persistent discharging wound in his left knee caused by multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After treatment with phages, viruses that attack specific bacteria, he recovered fully and has stayed infection-free and able to walk for nine months, according to Dr Kalyan Chakravarthy Koganti, an infectious diseases specialist at SHRI Hospital.

The phages were developed by Dr Sutharsan Govindarajan of SRM University-AP. The findings have been published in the journal IJID Regions, and the work has received a research grant. The team spoke as World Bacteriophage Day was marked on Thursday.
