Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has welcomed a pay agreement for staff at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), even as health workers continue to protest over pay and conditions, Mexico News Daily reports.
Speaking at her Thursday morning press conference, Sheinbaum said IMSS and the national social security workers' union had agreed an 8 per cent increase, made up of 4 per cent on base pay and 4 per cent on housing support. That is more than the institute first offered but less than the 10 per cent rise in base pay workers had sought.
Hundreds of IMSS health workers marched in Mexico City on Wednesday calling for better pay and conditions, more health funding and an end to shortages of medicines and supplies. It followed a larger protest in the capital on 13 October.
