Update: MP Helen Haines loses leg as Albanese says car attack was deliberate

·

Independent MP Helen Haines has lost a leg after being struck by a car outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria, Australian media reported on Tuesday, according to Al Jazeera.

The 65-year-old, who represents the seat of Indi, had surgery overnight and remains in a critical condition in a Melbourne hospital. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the vehicle had made a U-turn before hitting her and that it was clearly a deliberate act, though the motive is unknown. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said witnesses described her being hit twice.

The Australian Federal Police said the attack appeared to be an isolated incident. A 43-year-old man remains in custody, and police are considering charges including harming a Commonwealth public official. Local barber Ricky Jefferies has been praised for restraining the driver and taking a knife from him.
