Sudan has closed Ethiopia's consulate in the eastern city of Gedaref, a day after Ethiopia ordered six staff from the Sudanese consulate in the border town of Assosa to leave within 48 hours, The National reports, citing news sites linked to Sudan's military-backed government.
The two neighbours accuse each other of backing armed rivals. Sudan's army-aligned authorities say Ethiopia supports the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and has let them launch drones from its territory, a complaint they have taken to the UN Security Council and the African Union. Ethiopia accuses Sudan, Egypt and Eritrea of supporting rebels in Tigray. All sides deny the claims.
Observers fear the two conflicts could merge into a wider war in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia and Egypt also expelled each other's diplomats last month.
