Republican congressman Joe Wilson has asked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to impose sanctions on four Serbian businessmen close to Aleksandar Vucic, according to a letter seen by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, ahead of Sunday's Serbia election.
The letter, sent on 14 October in Wilson's role as co-chair of the US Helsinki Commission, names Ivan Bosnjak and Stojan Vujko of Millennium Team, Davor Macura of Alta Bank and Pink TV owner Zeljko Mitrovic. It seeks travel bans and exclusion from the US financial system, accusing them of corrupt enrichment and of helping to rig the vote.
Millennium Team and Alta Bank told RFE/RL the allegations are false, and Mitrovic did not address them directly. The State Department said it does not comment on correspondence with Congress. Vucic, who resigned as president in September, is seeking to return as prime minister.
