Victoria's Labor government has promised to limit public transport fares to $30 a week from 1 January if it wins next month's state election, The Guardian reports.
The premier, Ben Carroll, said the cap would save regular commuters about $1,400 a year. It would cost $206m and last two years, replacing half-price fares that were brought in after a spell of free travel during the fuel crisis linked to the US-Iran war. The government said savings elsewhere would pay for it. The Greens leader, Ellen Sandell, called for fares to be scrapped altogether. The pledge follows Labor's promise on Sunday to cap road tolls at $30 a week, which the opposition leader, Jess Wilson, said copied the Coalition's own $50 toll cap.
