A video showing people spitting on the statue of the murdered Conservative MP Sir David Amess in Southend has prompted calls for Essex Police to investigate, GB News reports.
The footage was posted on TikTok by a pro-Palestine activist account and has since been deleted. It shows the life-size statue on Chalkwell Esplanade being spat on several times, with one man accusing the late MP of backing the Iraq War. The account holder has denied being one of those who spat on the statue.
The clip appeared days after the fifth anniversary of Sir David's death. He was stabbed by Islamic State supporter Ali Harbi Ali at a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea in October 2021. The former home secretary Dame Priti Patel condemned the video as a sickening act and praised her late colleague's respect for free speech.
