France's draft budget for next year includes a €2.3 million provision to fund furnished offices for Emmanuel Macron once he leaves the Élysée Palace, according to a parliamentary report seen by Politico Europe.
The money would also cover rent, service charges and security for six years. The Élysée described it as a precautionary measure based on the experience of previous presidents, and Macron does not yet appear to have chosen his future workplace.
Former French presidents are entitled to lifelong benefits including a pension, offices, a driver and police protection, plus up to seven staff for their first five years out of office. Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande currently receive them. Macron, who will be 49 when his term ends in about seven months, has said he will not take his presidential pension and has not ruled out standing again in future.
