A private school network that replaces classroom teachers with AI-driven software has opened its first Chicago campus, charging $55,000 a year, CBS News reports.
Alpha School, founded in Austin, Texas, in 2014 by MacKenzie Price, says its adaptive learning system, called TimeBack, lets pupils master core subjects in about two hours a day. Adults on site are called guides and focus on supporting pupils rather than teaching lessons, while a remote team of subject experts reviews progress data daily.
The school says its students rank in the top one per cent on national tests and that the software tests understanding rather than handing out answers. A University of Colorado policy centre found earlier this year that only around a third of Alpha's guides have education training or degrees.
