Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate meetings in Shanghai on Tuesday with officials from Thailand, Laos and Myanmar as Beijing seeks closer ties with its Southeast Asian neighbours, CNA reports, citing statements from China's foreign ministry.
Wang said China backed Myanmar's government in pursuing political reconciliation. Myanmar's military-backed administration is led by the former general behind the 2021 coup, which triggered a civil war that the United Nations estimates has killed around 100,000 people and displaced more than 3.5 million. With Thailand, Wang called for stronger joint action against gambling and telecoms fraud. Both countries have been targeting scam call centres along Thailand's borders with Myanmar and Cambodia, many of which rely on trafficked workers.
