Norway's armed forces are placing air-surveillance sensors in Kirkenes, close to the border with Russia, to detect stray or unauthorised drones, NRK reports. The defence ministry said the air force would deploy NASAMS sensors there and that the garrison in Sør-Varanger would be reinforced with just over 30 soldiers until the end of the year.
Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik said the move was preventive and not a response to any specific new threat, adding that Norway did not see a heightened air threat to Finnmark. The ministry said the decision drew on recent drone incidents elsewhere in Europe and lessons from the war in Ukraine. Police remain responsible for tackling illegal drone flights, with the military able to assist on request.
