An investigation by Finnish public broadcaster Yle has found that WhatsApp's channel recommendations are steering adult users towards channels run by children they do not know. Yle's verification team identified channels operated by hundreds of Finnish children, sharing dance clips, selfies and details of their daily routines, and in some cases personal information about where they go.
More than 50 of the channels had an administrator under 13, below the app's minimum age. Many children appear to believe their channels are visible only to followers, but WhatsApp channels are always public. Save the Children Finland told Yle the recommendation feature exposes children to risks such as grooming and bullying. Yle said it had edited the images it published to protect the children's privacy.
