Washington state's top election official has told the Justice Department that its list of 400 people alleged to be non-citizens registered to vote is unreliable and includes many US citizens, CBS News reports.
Two federal prosecutors had written to Secretary of State Steve Hobbs on Monday asking for ballots from those on the list to be set aside until their citizenship was checked, a week before the 3 November midterm elections. More than 1.3 million mail ballots have already been returned in the state.
Hobbs replied that a preliminary check found many people on the list were citizens, and a significant number were not registered in Washington or had inactive registrations. He warned that refusing to count ballots without individual proof of ineligibility would be irresponsible and likely illegal, and questioned how the Trump administration had compiled the list.
