The Conservatives have asked Prime Minister Andy Burnham to say whether he still has full confidence in his national security adviser, Jonathan Powell, after Mr Powell's wife, the author Sarah Helm, appeared to voice support for the banned group Palestine Action on X, GB News reports. The Metropolitan Police said her post did not meet the threshold for a criminal offence.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, shadow national security minister Alicia Kearns also raised a later post in which Ms Helm, asked whether her husband had a role in proscribing the group, replied that he had not. Ms Kearns said that if the reply was accurate it disclosed sensitive information, and asked whether Mr Powell's security clearance would be reviewed. Downing Street said the views were those of an individual who does not represent the government.
