MEPs urge EU governments to end deadlock over scrapping clock changes

·

A group of MEPs has written to transport ministers in all 27 EU countries urging them to restart stalled talks on ending the twice-yearly clock change, The Local Sweden reports. Clocks across Europe go back an hour this weekend.

The European Commission proposed abolishing the changes in 2018 after a public consultation drew 4.6 million responses, 84% of them in favour. The European Parliament backed the plan in 2019, but national governments have never agreed on whether to keep permanent summer or winter time, or how to avoid a patchwork of time zones. Spain, supported by Poland and Finland, tried to revive the issue last year.

The letter's lead author, German MEP Peter Liese, a medical doctor, called governments' inaction irresponsible and cited health effects such as disturbed sleep. A Commission-ordered impact study is due by the end of the year.
