South Africa’s Presidency website goes offline over global PHP security flaw

·

The website of South Africa's Presidency has been taken offline as a precaution in response to what officials called a global cybersecurity event, Daily Maverick reports.

The Presidency announced on X on Friday that the site was temporarily unavailable, without saying when it would return. Hours later Daily Maverick found it still could not be reached.

The move appears linked to two critical flaws disclosed this week in PHP, the open-source programming language behind a large share of the world's websites, including those built on WordPress. The FBI's cyber division warned that the vulnerabilities could let attackers run code remotely and urged organisations to update immediately or take systems offline until they were fixed. Government sites in the UK and Canada have already been taken down for the same reason.
