A scrub fire in the Waiouru military training area on New Zealand's Central Plateau grew to about 238 hectares on Monday, RNZ reports.
The New Zealand Defence Force said the fire started during live-fire training on Sunday and was believed to have been put out, but it reignited on Monday morning. Fire and Emergency crews were called at about 10.15am.
By evening five helicopter crews, nine firefighting crews and 13 defence force staff were working on the blaze, which the military said could take another day to extinguish. Fire and Emergency said the area was isolated, there were no reports of injuries and the fire posed no threat to the Desert Road or buildings, although large plumes of smoke were visible from State Highway 1.
