Novaya Gazeta, one of Russia's last independent newspapers, has announced that it is shutting down, saying pressure from the authorities has left it no choice, The Guardian reports. The paper had earlier been told to leave its Moscow newsroom.
In a video statement on Friday, editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov said the Russian security services had forced the team to stop working and that the paper would switch off its servers and leave its offices on 9 November. Earlier this month Sokolov was questioned and his home searched in a case involving his colleague Oleg Roldugin, who was arrested in April on computer-access charges, which he denies.
Moscow lists the paper as a foreign agent, and its media licence was revoked in 2022. Its former editor, Dmitry Muratov, shared the 2021 Nobel peace prize.
