Alaska's Republican-led state government has asked a federal judge to dismiss the Justice Department lawsuit seeking to stop certification of the state's US Senate result, calling it meritless, PBS NewsHour reports, citing the Associated Press.
The suit, filed at President Donald Trump's direction, asks Judge Sharon Gleason to hold back certification of a possible win by Democrat Mary Peltola until it is established whether voters were confused by a second candidate named Dan Sullivan on the ballot alongside the Republican senator. On Friday the department also asked for every ballot cast for the second Dan Sullivan to be kept separate.
In Saturday's filing, the state attorney general's office said that request was both disturbing and impossible, as it could not be done without breaching voter privacy. The judge had set Saturday as the deadline for arguments on dismissal.
