Sam Altman says he wants people to have plenty of RAM after backlash over remarks

·

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has tried to clarify earlier remarks about computer memory, The Verge reports. In posts on X, where he briefly renamed himself "Ram Altman", he said he wanted people to be able to put as much memory as they liked in their computers, complained that his comments had been taken out of context, and said he had long argued for the world to produce more memory.

The row followed an interview on the Cheeky Pint podcast in which Altman described it as terrible that much of the world's limited DRAM sat in personal computers that used it only a small fraction of the time. AI data centres have been buying up large amounts of memory, causing shortages and pushing up prices. Intel expects the squeeze to last at least through next year, and SK Hynix has suggested it could continue until 2030.
