Leaders of India's opposition Congress party have pointed to the US midterm elections as evidence that voters can push back against what they called authoritarian tendencies, The Hindu reports. General secretary K.C. Venugopal said "change is in the air" and argued that democracy belonged to ordinary citizens rather than billionaires or technology platforms.
Communications chief Jairam Ramesh called the result a stunning verdict against President Donald Trump and said it showed how midterm votes hold governments to account. He argued that the Modi government's plan for simultaneous national and state elections, known as One Nation, One Election, would weaken that check. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi highlighted the win of Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, who will become the first Muslim in the US Senate.
