Voters in Alaska will decide at the midterm election whether to reword the state law on who may vote, the Alaska Beacon reports.
Ballot Measure 3 would change the statute from saying a United States citizen may vote to saying only a citizen may vote. Non-citizens are already barred from voting in state and national elections, and the measure would leave the other eligibility rules, such as age and residency, untouched.
The proposal is backed by former Republican lawmakers including John Coghill, Josh Revak and Mike Chenault. Their campaign group, Alaskans for Citizen Voting, argues the current wording leaves a gap and has raised close to $900,000, most of it from the Republican donor Richard Uihlein, according to the Anchorage Daily News. The group is part of a national network pushing similar measures in other states.
