Norwegian authorities have ordered the culling of about 7,500 hens after bird flu was confirmed at a poultry farm in Klepp, on the Jæren coast in Rogaland, NRK reports. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority said it was told of the suspected case on Monday, and samples tested positive on Tuesday evening.
A three-kilometre protection zone and a ten-kilometre surveillance zone have been set up around the farm. A wider infected zone covering seven municipalities, including Stavanger, Sandnes, Sola and Klepp, now requires domestic birds to be kept indoors or under a covered roof so they cannot mix with wild birds. Bird shows and other gatherings are banned, and moving birds or eggs within the zones is forbidden. Officials see no sign yet that other commercial flocks in the county are infected, though the virus is widespread among wild birds.
