Poland's dispute over its Constitutional Tribunal escalated on Tuesday as President Karol Nawrocki accused Prime Minister Donald Tusk of an illegal power grab, Politico Europe reports. Eight judges elected by Tusk's parliamentary majority met and declared they had enough members to restart the court's long-stalled work, days after the government suspended the tribunal's president and his deputy.
Opening a televised National Security Council meeting, Nawrocki said Tusk bore full responsibility for police deployed outside the court and for what he called unlawful orders, and urged him to halt his government's actions. Earlier, he had called on the president to stop attacking judges chosen by parliament and accused Moscow of exploiting the turmoil. The row dates back to appointments made by the previous Law and Justice government, which the European Commission and Tusk say must be undone to meet EU standards.
