Djokovic becomes oldest winner at Paris Masters and will face Australia’s Hijikata

·

Novak Djokovic has become the oldest player to win a match at the Paris Masters, beating Monaco's Valentin Vacherot 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 in the first round at the age of 39, ABC News reports. The seven-time champion saved three break points at 4-4 in the second set and needed treatment on his right shoulder before taking control of the deciding set.

He will next play Australia's Rinky Hijikata, who has won three matches this week without dropping a set. The result matters for Alex de Minaur, who sits one place above Djokovic in the race for the eight spots at the ATP Finals. If both men advance, they could meet in the third round in a match that might decide which of them qualifies. De Minaur must first beat Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
