Security in the Black Sea has become the main issue in Bulgaria's presidential election on 25 October, DW reports, after recent drone attacks on ships brought the leading candidates' differences over Ukraine to the fore.
Of 27 candidates, the race is between incumbent Iliana Yotova, backed by Prime Minister Rumen Radev, and former caretaker prime minister Andrey Gyurov, supported by opposition parties. A runoff, if needed, would be held on 1 November. Mr Radev's party won an outright parliamentary majority in April, the first in almost three decades.
Ms Yotova proposes a "Coalition of Peace" and says no Bulgarian soldier will be sent to war on her watch. Mr Gyurov warns of a concentration of power and says a president must be able to say no. The presidency is largely ceremonial but includes command of the armed forces and a legislative veto.
