Staff at Stormen library in central Bodø, in northern Norway, keep overdose-reversal nasal spray on hand and have been trained to deal with violence and threats, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reports.
Library manager Stine Qvigstad Jenvin told NRK that people increasingly use the building's public toilets to take drugs, and syringe packaging is often found in bins. Staff have sometimes had to call the police to remove people,. NRK says several other libraries in Norway face similar problems.
Police in Bodø said a small group of people had caused trouble for officers and businesses in the city centre since the summer, with reported thefts doubling compared with last year. The head of the Church City Mission in Bodø said more people, and younger people, were living on the margins, and health services were struggling to help them.
