The prime minister, Andy Burnham, is launching a campaign on Monday against passengers who play music or videos aloud on buses and trains, The Guardian reports.
New guidance will let local transport authorities fine people up to £100 for such nuisance behaviour, with enforcement carried out by transport safety officers or police. Train operators can already impose penalties of up to £1,000. A poster campaign under the slogan "share the carriage, not the noise" will urge travellers to wear headphones, keep calls off speakerphone and watch videos quietly. Polling suggests most voters support action on the issue, and other politicians, including the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, and the Liberal Democrats, have made similar pledges. Transport unions said the new rules would do little to protect staff.
