Residents opposing plans for an asylum centre at the former RAF base in Linton-on-Ouse, North Yorkshire, estimate the scheme could cost the public more than £270m, GB News reports.
The village of about 700 people could host up to 1,200 asylum seekers under the government's proposals. In an open letter to the Chancellor, John Healey, the Linton Action group argues the site may have to go back to the Ministry of Defence by July 2029, leaving it in use for less than two years once decommissioning is allowed for. The group stresses the figure is its own calculation, based on set-up, running and closure costs at similar sites, not an official Home Office number. A previous plan for the base was dropped in 2022 after the MoD withdrew permission, and the National Audit Office later recorded £2.9m of wasted spending on it.
