Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario's Premier Doug Ford have announced nearly $9 billion in support for the province's steel and car industries, which have been hit by US tariffs, CTV News reports.
The plan includes $5 billion to modernise Ontario steel mills, $2.5 billion to help carmakers shift to electric vehicle production and $1 billion for roads to the mineral-rich Ring of Fire region in northern Ontario. Ontario is contributing $2.67 billion.
Speaking in Ottawa on Wednesday, Carney said US tariffs had overturned a long-standing trade arrangement and that Canada was focusing on what it could control. He said the measures would help create about 70,000 jobs and protect around 220,000 more. Ford said the relationship with the United States had changed permanently, whatever the outcome of the US midterm elections.
