The Illinois shipping executive and Republican donor Richard Uihlein has spent more than $800,000 backing an Alaska ballot measure that would restate the existing ban on non-citizens voting, the Anchorage Daily News reports.
State law already says voters must be US citizens. Ballot Measure 3 would change the wording so that only citizens may vote. It is not expected to change any election practice, and no group has formed to oppose it.
The money has gone through Americans for Citizen Voting, a national group supporting similar measures in other states, and is mostly being spent on digital and postal advertising. The chair of the Alaska campaign, the former state legislator John Coghill, described it as preemptive, as the state has no documented problem with non-citizen voting. A progressive voter guide warned that the measure suggests a problem that does not exist.
