New Zealand Police set up a laboratory to test artificial intelligence tools around August last year, according to documents released under the Official Information Act and reported by RNZ.
The lab was created to test capabilities and oversee the use of AI across the force, at a time when some officers were breaking internal rules by using AI-powered translation tools. It has looked at a translation tool from Meta, an AI forensic data analysis product and an app to transcribe recorded police interviews, which a qualified person would check.
The documents show police planned a lighter risk assessment for the Meta tool than they had carried out for the Whisper translation software. Police said this week they had robust testing and approval processes to meet legal, privacy and security requirements. RNZ previously reported that officers' rule breaches risked exposing confidential information.
