Independent UN human rights experts have asked Meta to explain whether its moderation, recommendation and AI systems disadvantaged one side in Brazil's presidential race, four days before Sunday's run-off, The Rio Times reports.
The experts cited monitoring reports of thousands of accounts and posts on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp facing suspensions, reduced reach and sharing limits, including those of journalists and campaigners. They said information, some of it from Meta employees, suggested accounts linked to one side had been disproportionately restricted, though the statement does not name a candidate.
They urged Meta to explain its decisions, apply its rules consistently and offer remedies during the election itself. Meta says it followed a Brazilian court order to treat both campaigns equally and denies favouring either. President Lula's campaign has accused the company of limiting its posts' reach before the vote against Flávio Bolsonaro.
