At least 16 people have been killed and 32 injured by the magnitude 7 earthquake in northern Tibet, 1News reports, citing Chinese official media. Earlier reports had confirmed casualties but gave no figures.
The Nagqu city media office said at least 339 homes collapsed, and 11 of the injured are in a serious condition. Police and fire crews are carrying on search and rescue work and putting up tents for people who lost their homes.
China's state broadcaster CCTV described it as the strongest earthquake in the region for five years. The US Geological Survey said it struck late on Friday local time, about 191km east-north-east of Nagqu, in a remote, high-altitude and thinly populated area, at a depth of 18km. Nagqu lies more than 300km north of the Tibetan capital, Lhasa.
