Lewis Hamilton hopes to race on into the 2030s for Rwanda’s African Grand Prix

·

Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton says he wants to keep racing until he can take part in the planned African Grand Prix in Rwanda, The Guardian reports. F1 confirmed last week a 10-year deal for a race on a new circuit at Bugesera, south of Kigali, with the first event due in the early 2030s. It would be the sport's first race in Africa since South Africa's Kyalami in 1993.

Hamilton, 41 and contracted to Ferrari until the end of 2027, said racing in Africa had long been his dream and he would try to stay fit and competitive for at least four more years.

Amnesty UK has called the deal sportswashing, citing Rwanda's human rights record. Hamilton said the race could be a force for good and that the issues should be approached with humility.
