Miller gives no timeline for new digital safety regulator under Bill C-34

·

Culture Minister Marc Miller has said he cannot give a date for when Canada's planned digital safety regulator will be up and running, Global News reports, citing The Canadian Press. Speaking at a McGill University conference in Montreal, he said ministers were working as fast as possible on Bill C-34, the online safety legislation that would also bar children from social media.

Officials had earlier estimated the new Digital Safety and Data Protection Commission would take 18 months to set up. Canadian Medical Association head Alex Munter said that was too slow, and Miller said he shared the concern.

The commission would have five cabinet-appointed members with powers to issue binding orders and fines and to judge companies' age checks. The bill awaits second reading in the Commons. Miller said he was open to amendments, including on gaming platforms with social media-like features.
