Ecuadorian opposition leader Luisa González has been detained as part of an inquiry into the funding of her 2023 presidential campaign, Al Jazeera reports. She was arrested in the rural town of Canuto, and the attorney general's office said warrants had been carried out against three people suspected of money laundering.
Prosecutors are looking at how about $500,000 for campaign advertising was routed through a network of entities in 2023 without proper disclosure of its source. Seven people are under investigation.
González, an ally of former president Rafael Correa, lost to President Daniel Noboa in 2023 and 2025. She called the accusations absurd, and her Citizen Revolution Movement and Correa described the arrest as political persecution and demanded her release. The movement has been barred from local elections due on 29 November.
