Prime Minister Andy Burnham has promised that Britain will stay on course for net zero by 2050 and will not issue new North Sea licences, days after the government approved the Jackdaw gasfield, The Guardian reports. Writing in the paper, he said the government's commitment to tackling the climate crisis was unwavering, pointing to the country's record-breaking hot summer.
Burnham defended Jackdaw as a way to use home-grown gas during a period of global instability and to treat oil and gas workers in places such as Aberdeen with more care.
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said the decision on the Rosebank oilfield rested with her alone, warning that any attempt by other departments to overrule her would be challenged in court. Sources quoted by the paper said she is inclined to reject it, which could set up a clash with the Treasury.
