Two killed in Saudi Arabia by debris from intercepted drone as US orders staff out

·

Two people were killed and two injured in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday when debris from a drone shot down by air defences fell near a processing plant at Saudi Aramco's Shaybah oilfield in the Eastern Province, The National reports.

Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry said the drone had been aimed at the plant and that the debris set fire to a contractor's vehicle outside its perimeter, with no effect on oilfield operations. The dead were Filipino and Nepali nationals, and the injured were Pakistani and Indian.

Separately, the US State Department ordered non-emergency government staff and their families to leave Saudi Arabia. A spokesman, Tommy Pigott, cited increased attacks on the kingdom by Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, including strikes on civilian airports and other infrastructure that have caused civilian casualties and travel disruption.
