Speaking in Madrid on Wednesday, Argentina's President Javier Milei said his government would pursue its claim to the Falkland Islands by diplomatic means and did not believe in military solutions, MercoPress reports.
Speaking at a business breakfast, Milei repeated Argentina's position that the islands belong to it and said it would keep negotiating until they were returned. He also described Britain's geopolitical and demographic problems as a risk for the region, without explaining what he meant.
Britain says the islands are British and their people have the right to choose their future; in a 2013 referendum 99.8 per cent voted to remain a British overseas territory. The remarks come ahead of hearings at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg on 10 and 11 November over Argentina's bid to halt the Sea Lion oil project.
