Speaker Lindsay Hoyle rebukes ministers after Jackdaw decision is announced to media first

·

The Commons Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, has accused the government of treating MPs appallingly after its decision on the Jackdaw gas field was set out in the media before it was announced to Parliament, GB News reports.

Speaking after Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, Sir Lindsay said it was shameful that the House had not been told first and a serious discourtesy that the Energy Secretary, Miatta Fahnbulleh, was absent. She was visiting Shell's St Fergus gas terminal in Aberdeenshire and gave a round of broadcast interviews instead.

The energy minister Michael Shanks, who answered in her place, said he respected the Speaker's comments and would pass them on. The approval lets Shell and Equinor begin production at the North Sea field east of Aberdeen. Ministers say it is compatible with the UK's climate commitments, while some MPs and campaigners say it undermines net zero.
