Brad Lander, the Democratic candidate for New York's 10th congressional district, said on Wednesday that he had been detained by the Israel Defense Forces in the occupied West Bank, NBC News reports.
In a post on X, the former New York City comptroller said he had been held along with a group of rabbis and volunteers while picking olives, and shared a photo of himself on a bus. He was visiting with the Protect the Harvest coalition, which says it helps Palestinian farmers bring in their crop despite settler attacks. The IDF did not immediately respond to NBC's request for comment.
Lander defeated the incumbent, Dan Goldman, in a primary dominated by views on Israel, and has called the war in Gaza a genocide. The UN reported in July that more than 900 Palestinians had been injured in settler attacks this year.
