State school vouchers fuel growth of classical Christian schools across the US

·

New taxpayer-funded scholarship schemes are helping classical Christian schools expand across the United States, ABC News reports in an Associated Press feature.

Texas began rolling out $1 billion this summer that eligible families can spend on private education, one of a wave of similar programmes passed by Republican-led legislatures over the past six years. Half of all school-age children in the US can now apply for state money to attend private schools, most of which are religious.

In the Dallas–Fort Worth suburbs, administrator Keith Castello is opening three schools this autumn and scouting more sites, saying demand is booming. His schools belong to the Association of Classical Christian Schools, founded by Idaho pastor Doug Wilson, which the report says has links to the Trump administration. Critics argue the programmes drain funding from public schools and raise church-state concerns.
