Suspected militants set fire to several houses in Khoikai Kuki, an empty village near Chassad in Manipur's Kamjong district, early on Wednesday morning, The Hindu reports, citing police.
The blaze was started at about 5.30am. Residents had already left the village as fighting between the Kuki and Naga communities intensified. Police said they had not yet established who was responsible or how much damage was done.
The incident adds to tension in the north-east Indian state, where more than 50 people have died and dozens of homes have been burnt in clashes between the two tribal groups since early this year. Districts hit by the violence include Tamenglong, Noney, Kangpokpi, Ukhrul and Kamjong. A 48-hour general strike was called in Imphal this week after three civilians were shot dead.
