France's National Assembly is due to vote on a Socialist Party bill that would give legal status to an estimated 300,000 to 400,000 undocumented immigrants who have worked in France for more than six months, Politico Europe reports.
The proposal, tabled by the Socialist MP Paul Christophle, cites Spain's decision earlier this year under Pedro Sánchez to regularise about half a million people as a model. It is expected to rally left-wing deputies but is likely to fail because of opposition from centre-right and far-right groups.
The centre-left presidential candidate Raphaël Glucksmann is expected to back the plan. His supporters hope the debate will set him apart from centrist rivals such as Édouard Philippe, who wants any amnesty tied to a European agreement, and win over some voters who backed Emmanuel Macron in 2022.
