Iran's Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence of Leila Abolhasani, a 43-year-old nail technician convicted over a shop fire during January's anti-government protests, and sent her case back for retrial, The National reports, citing the group Human Rights Activists in Iran.
Prosecutors had accused the mother of two of helping to set the shop alight in Shahin Shahr. She was convicted in August of "enmity against God" and sentenced to death. Supporters say she was only filming the burning building. Activists say no ruling or evidence in the case has been published.
Campaigners called the decision a rare success. Amnesty International said this month that at least 34 people had been executed in cases linked to the January protests, and a UN-backed fact-finding mission has said the crackdown amounted to crimes against humanity.
