Sugarcane farmers in Karnataka, India, are expected to suspend their Hubballi Chalo protest march on Monday, its sixth day, and resume it after a national farmers' rally in New Delhi on 23 October, The Hindu reports.
The farmers have been campaigning for higher prices for sugarcane and sugar, first with road blockades and then with a march from Belagavi district. Leaders meeting near Tegur village said farmers had been away from their fields since 13 October while crops were suffering from dry weather. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has promised a meeting of farmers, mill owners and officials next week and agreed to consider a state price demand. Leaders said they had received no response from the central government to their deadline for revising minimum prices.
